Igbo Coup is trending because former Dictator and Head of State General Ibrahim Babangida has alleged that, the 1966 coup was not an Igbo Coup.

In his new book, IBB reiterated Maj. Nzeogwu was a identical Northener, with an Igbo name.

That he was born in Kaduna, grew up in Kaduna and had a strong command of Hausa.

And like we’ve explained several times, forcing alleged patriotic Nigerians to call us IPOB. IBB confirms the coup’s intentions was to turn the country around, as the young soldiers already had enough.

Nzeogwu’s sole objective was to release Obafemi Awolowo and make him the Prime Minister. Even though, Nnamdi Azikiwe the then President, was also on the execution list.

In the book, IBB revealed that some senior Igbo officers who stood firmly against the Revolution were murdered. And at the end the failed coup was tamed by an Igbo officer, Major John Obienu.

IBB mentioned four Yoruba soldiers who were also core members of the coup; including General Ademoyega, Captain Ganiyu Adeleke, Lt. Fola Oyewole and Lt. Olafimihan.

Although many doubt IBB’s integrity, but this facts have been established over time. It wasn’t an Igbo coup. Maj. Ademoyega in 1981 also reiterated it wasn’t an Igbo coup.

However, Nigerians feel IBB should have released the book sooner, for a more robust reaction. And this doesn’t absolve him off his alleged crimes.

General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida was a military President of Nigeria from 1985 until his resignation in 1993. He also was the Chief of Army Staff from January 1984 to August 1985.
